Where's the key code located to program keys for my Yamaha XT500?

Hello! We've developed a VIN-based tool to help you get your key code for the Yamaha XT500. Check it out here: VIN Key Code Generator.

Wish I found this thread before towing my Yamaha XT500.

Hope this method is better than the last one I tried on my Yamaha XT500.

Will this work if the Yamaha XT500 has an aftermarket alarm?

Looking for the same thing for my Yamaha XT500, hope someone can help.

Bookmarking this for when I work on my Yamaha XT500 this weekend.

🔑 Car Key & Fob FAQ

Common questions about key programming, fob issues, and replacement options

Cost & Options
Quality aftermarket keys work well for most vehicles at lower cost. However, some luxury brands use proprietary technology only available through dealers. For expensive cars, OEM may be worth the extra cost for reliability.
Key Programming
Some vehicles allow DIY key programming using specific sequences (like turning ignition on/off with original keys). However, most modern cars require specialized equipment only locksmiths or dealers have. Check your owner's manual for your specific model.
Key Tip: Always have at least two working keys to avoid expensive replacements
Key Fob Issues
This typically indicates: weak fob battery (replace first), damaged fob antenna, or issues with your car's receiver (often in the door handle or rearview mirror). Environmental interference from other electronics can also reduce range.
Key Tip: Newer cars often require dealer programming for first key replacement
Lost Keys
1) Contact a locksmith who specializes in automotive keys or your dealership 2) Provide proof of ownership (registration, title, ID) 3) They'll either cut new keys by code or reprogram your car's system 4) This is expensive ($200-$800) as the immobilizer may need resetting.
Security Systems
A flashing security light often indicates an immobilizer issue. Solid light suggests the system is armed but not recognizing your key. Causes: faulty key chip, damaged antenna ring, low battery, or system needs reprogramming.
Key Tip: Replace key fob batteries every 1-2 years as preventative maintenance
Key Fact: Key fob batteries typically last 3-4 years with normal use
